This past weekend I got out of my shell and fully embraced the herbivore and wellness wonk in me at a rooftop group dinner event. The Wandering is a plant-based and seasonally inspired gathering series that two local DC Instagrammer’s host. On an impulse (tickets go fast!) I signed up for their latest event which was a rooftop dinner, with mini tutorials on urban gardening and mixology sprinkled in the mix. It was so fun!
The event was held in Navy Yard where Up Top Acres has taken over several building rooftops to grow and harvest produce which is sold to members of their Community Support Agricultural (CSA) program and at local restaurants and farmers markets.
Throughout the night the team from Up Top Acres shared more about urban gardening and how they’re planning to expand their business model. The team from True Syrups, a local small-batch mixer company, demo’d a raspberry Long Island iced tea cocktail concoction and shared fun mixology facts.
At the table, my plate was full of greens and fun carnivore-inspired bbq favorites. The salads were so fresh and delicious! One was made with local strawberries, mint and macadamia nuts and I’m not entirely sure what was in the slaw, but it was super light and flavorful. The sweet potato steak fries were a great accompaniment to the quinoa, black bean and tomato slider on a pretzel bun.
And dessert was a delicious chilled mason jar filled with a berry compote, coconut cream and maple buckwheat shortcake. So good! With dessert and a rosé nightcap in hand I snapped a few more pics of the gorgeous Southwest Waterfront sunset.
There were other weekly highlights, too, like baking up a particularly good loaf of chocolate chip banana bread, volunteering at the DC Girls on the Run 5k downtown and karaoke at the famed Hill Country, but all not pictured.
