Turn and Test

Daylight savings is the perfect time to “turn and test” – as in reset clocks and test smoke detectors to see if devices and batteries are up to speed. To really drive home this message, over the weekend I joined the Red Cross National Capital Region in Southeast DC to canvass areas at-risk of home fires. I met with other volunteers and firefighters at a local fire station for a quick training before heading out into the neighborhood!

Our group knocked on over 150 doors and installed 64 smoke alarms, while also sharing home fire safety and preparedness tips with area families. It’s always great to see the mission in action, especially right in the District! The Red Cross Home Fire Campaign as a whole launched in October 2014 with the mission to reduce home fire related deaths and injuries by 25% by 2020. So far more than 702,000 smoke alarms have been installed as part of the program and a confirmed 197 lives have been saved!

In other weekend events, I caught up with Annie, Dan and Keely (not pictured) over pizza, pasta and zappole at Graffiato. Delightful carbs and conversation.

And got in an eight mile run in preparation for the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler right around the corner. The cherry blossom peak bloom isn’t looking too strong this year, so at this point I’m just hoping for a warmer race than last year!
